So what is Whey Protein?
Whey or Sweet Whey is the fluid that remains of the milk of any animal after making cheese. Whey powder is made by drying fresh whey that has been pasteurized. It contains all the same nutritional profile of fresh whey, except the moisture, in the same proportions. Whey powder is typically 10-15 percent protein and 60-75 percent lactose (milk sugar).
Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC) is whey that has been filtered and processed to remove most of the lactose and fat. Instantised Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC) is spray dried with an additive named lecithin. This process creates a powder that mixes easily in milk or water when stirred with a spoon.
Instantised WPC is always high in protein with large amounts of branched-chain amino acids, as well as the full spectrum of amino acids (which are all the muscle building blocks you need to build muscle). It’s easily digestible and mixes well with milk or water.
Whey Protein Isolate (WPI) is whey that has been further processed, so that it contains much less fat and much less carbohydrate. The result is a powder that’s very high in protein, around 90 percent. Micro filtration, ultra filtration and ion exchange are different methods of separating the fat and lactose from the protein. WPI is lighter in colour than WPC, bland in taste and dissolves easily. Isolate is the best protein powder to consume straight after your workout because it digests very quickly, and is also recommended if weight loss is you main goal.
